Forged In Steel – The Deep-Lying Forward

Understanding the player roles of on Football Manager can be hard to do especially as the descriptions aren’t always the best and can often ignore important factors about what they do or don’t do. So to give you a better idea of the roles and how they function, I’ve decided to write about them. I will be doing this for every role I use in the 3-5-2 that I posted about earlier in the series. People should then get a sense of what to expect from a specific role and allow you to understand the basics of the roles. Which will in turn help you out when deciding which role best suits your needs for the tactic you are creating or the style you are trying to implement. The 4-4-2 Chronicles

It’s one of the oldest football formations around and has seen a resurgence of some kind in the past few years with teams like Leicester and Atletico Madrid having success using it. I’m of course talking about the 4-4-2 formation. Growing up as an English football fan the formation for me symbolises safety and familiarity. I’m not saying it’s the most successful tactic, although it’s had some incredible moments over the decades and many teams have seen great success using some kind of 4-4-2. But when things were going wrong and teams needed to strip back to basics, this always seemed to be the go to formation. Identifying Tactical Issues

I get asked an awful lot on how I identify issues while watching games and how I fix them. Firstly identifying the issues is of the most importance because if you haven’t or can’t identify issues then you’ll never have an idea of how it might be possible to fix them. People often say I don’t know how to identify issues because of their lack of understanding of the game but in all honesty you don’t need an understanding really. You just need to watch a game it really is that simple. Hopefully what follows below will show you how simple it can be and doesn’t need to be as daunting as people think it is.
